Paraglider Classification Regulations

Paraglider ratings are governed by international regulations that seek to ensure pilot safety and wing performance efficiency. These regulations establish categories based on rigorous testing and specific standards. The main regulations and criteria used to classify paragliders are detailed below.  

EN Standard (European Norm)

The EN standard is one of the most widely used standards worldwide and establishes different classification levels based on safety and flight performance tests.

Categories:

  • EN A: Beginner paragliders. They are the most stable and safe, ideal for beginners. They have a high resistance to bending and a very predictable behaviour.
  • EN B: Intermediate paragliders. They offer superior performance compared to A-grade, while maintaining good stability. They are suitable for pilots who have passed the initial phase.
  • EN C: Advanced performance paragliders. They are designed for experienced pilots, offering greater speed and manoeuvrability, but require greater skill to handle more complex flying situations.
  • EN D: High performance and competition paragliders. They are intended for very experienced pilots, with a great ability to react and handle extreme situations. They are less stable and more demanding in terms of handling.

 

Evidence:

  • Take-off and landing: Assessment of ease and control during these critical phases of flight.
  • Folding manoeuvres: Stability and recovery tests after partial or total folding.
  • Behaviour in turbulence: Analysis of the glider’s reaction in turbulent conditions and its ability to maintain control.

 

Normative LTF (Lufttüchtigkeitsforderungen)

The LTF standard, originating from Germany, is also widely recognised and used alongside the EN standard. Although their categories are similar, they focus on slightly different aspects.

Categories:

  • LTF 1: Equivalent to EN A. Very safe and stable gliders, designed for beginners.
  • LTF 1-2: Similar to EN B. They offer balanced performance for intermediate riders.
  • LTF 2: Comparable to EN C. Intended for experienced pilots, they offer higher performance with higher skill demands.
  • LTF 2-3: Equivalent to EN D. High performance gliders for very advanced and competitive pilots.

 

Evidence:

  • Manoeuvrability: Assessment of the ability to perform controlled turns and manoeuvres.
  • Dynamic stability: Analysis of paraglider behaviour in unstable situations.
  • Automatic recovery: Tests the glider’s ability to return to a stable flight configuration after aggressive manoeuvres.

 

Normative DHV (Deutscher Hängegleiterverband e.V.)

The DHV standard, although less common today, is still relevant, especially in Europe. It focuses on certifying safety and performance through extensive testing.

Categories:

  • DHV 1: For beginners, with high levels of safety and stability.
  • DHV 1-2: For intermediate riders, balancing performance and safety.
  • DHV 2: For advanced pilots, offering higher performance with a higher skill demand.
  • DHV 2-3: For experienced riders, focused on competitive performance.

  • Passive safety assessment: Includes tests of paraglider performance in various flight conditions.
  • Stability analysis: Longitudinal and lateral stability tests.
  • Simulation of critical situations: Evaluation of the paraglider’s response in emergency situations and its resilience.
