26 Jun Parasailing: An Adventure on the Sea
What is Parasailing?
Parasailing, also known as parascending or parakiting, is a recreational water sport in which a person is towed behind a boat while attached to a special parachute. As the speedboat accelerates, the parachute rises, taking the passenger with it to heights ranging from a few metres to several hundred metres above the water.
History of Parasailing
Parasailing had its roots in the 1960s, when Pierre-Marcel Lemoigne designed the first ascending parachute. Over the years, this activity has evolved, improving in terms of safety and enjoyment. Today, it is a popular attraction in coastal tourist destinations around the world.
How does it work?
- Preparation: The passenger is fitted with a harness which is connected to the parachute and a long rope which in turn is attached to the speedboat.
- Take-off: As the launch begins to accelerate, the wind will inflate the parachute, lifting the passenger gently into the air.
- Flight: Once in the air, passengers can enjoy the panoramic views and the sensation of floating above the water.
- Landing: The boat slows down gradually, allowing the parachute to descend gently until the passenger touches the water or the boat platform again.
Parasailing vs. Paragliding: What’s the difference?
Although parasailing and paragliding both involve flying with a parachute, they are quite different activities in terms of experience, environment and technique.
Environment
- Parasailing: Parasailing is done over bodies of water, such as seas, lakes or rivers. The passenger is towed by a boat, which means that the flight depends on the speed and direction of the boat.
- Paragliding: Usually practised in mountainous or hilly areas. The flight starts from a slope or high platform and relies on thermals and wind to keep the pilot in the air.
Experience
- Parasailing: Offers a more controlled and accessible experience for beginners. It is ideal for those looking for a relaxed and safe way to enjoy the heights and coastal views.
- Paragliding: Provides a freer and more dynamic experience. The pilot has greater control over flight direction and altitude, allowing for more complex and exciting manoeuvres.
Equipment and technique
- Parasailing: Requires a special parachute designed to be towed by a boat, a harness and a long rope. No training is required, as the flight is controlled by the boat.
- Paragliding: Use a paraglider, which is a light aircraft without an engine. The pilot must be adequately trained to learn to control the glider, manage take-off, flight and landing.
Flight duration
- Parasailing: The flight usually lasts between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on the package and the conditions of the day.
- Paragliding: It can last from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the weather conditions and the skill of the pilot.
